CPD Explained

August 2025 · 6 min read

CPD is one of those topics that everyone knows they should be on top of, and very few people feel completely comfortable with. The rules are actually simpler than they used to be.

Here is a plain summary and, more usefully, how to plan a year that helps rather than a year that ticks a box.

The current RCVS framework

The RCVS operates an outcomes based approach to CPD. That means the focus is on how CPD changes what you do, rather than on hitting a fixed number of hours. Records should include planning, reflection and how you applied what you learned.

The RCVS website is the authoritative source for the current requirements, and it is worth checking there for the latest position rather than relying on any summary.

Planning a useful year

  • Pick two or three areas you want to strengthen in the year ahead.
  • Choose a mix of structured learning, case based reflection and peer discussion.
  • Include at least one topic outside your comfort zone.
  • Leave room for opportunistic CPD as cases arise.

Getting the most out of your budget

A CPD budget is a small business decision. Think about what will make the biggest difference to your caseload or your career, not just what looks interesting in a brochure.

In person courses are worth the extra cost when the practical element matters, for example surgical skills. Online CPD is often better value for knowledge based topics.

Reflection without the paperwork burden

Reflection does not have to be lengthy. A short note after each activity, covering what you learned and how you plan to apply it, is enough. Keep it in one place so you can review it before your annual review or appraisal.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to hit a specific number of hours?
The current framework is outcomes based rather than a strict hours target. Check the RCVS website for the current position.
Does CPD have to be clinical?
No. Leadership, communication and business CPD all count when relevant to your role.

CPD works when it is planned around what you actually want to be better at. The record is the easy part once the plan is right.
